I'm not a big fan of mainstream music. In fact, I make a conscious effort to not keep up with who's on the Top 100 and stuff like that. Occasionally, when I decide to turn on the radio, I'm reminded of why I keep my distance. Simply put, hearing the same song multiple times while flipping through stations gets really annoying. So I don't really know about a lot of the mainstream music that comes out until someone recommends stuff to me, or I see it online or something. About two or three years ago when Bruno Mars came on to the scene with his hits Grenade and Just the Way You Are; I wasn't ecstatic about the guy. To be honest, I soon got pretty sick of hearing them.

Fast forward a little to the release of Unorthodox Jukebox, Mars' second studio album, and I still didn't really know much about him. Luckily, my sister kind of likes pop music enough to listen and filter out the good, the bad and the "wtf is this". Without her, I wouldn't have given some of his work a chance. I'm pretty happy she'd blast songs on our iTunes despite my reluctancy. That being said, here's a video of his that I stumbled upon recently. It's about two months old (I know, I'm late) and unless you've seen it I suggest you press play and try to be as unbiased as possible, no matter what genre of music you're interested in. It's just very smooth and energetic; I also like the old school effect he put on the video; it reminds me of Michael Jackson's "Rock With You". Enjoy : )

If you somewhat keep up with my blog or even fuck with me in real life then you know I'm not a normal teenager. So of course the first interview I did with an artist for this blog definitely couldn't just be some normal shit, or any normal artist for that matter. That said, meet Donny Oh. I discovered this kid on Twitter, he came up in my "Who to Follow" suggestions mad long ago, which is basically Twitter's way of tailoring your followings based on users you follow already. Anyway, he's a really chill guy from Brooklyn who tweets about everyday shit, his opinions on music and life, and the occasional epiphany or rant. Also he's mad smart (he got accepted into Carnegie Mellon and graduated from high school at 17). So basically we got a modern day triple threat on our hands. From listening to some of the other stuff he's dropped over the past few months, I could see that he had a great deal of promise. I remember putting my best friend on to his music back at school and her being like "yeah, he's got flow". I also find it really cool that other accredited music blogs picked up on his shit, so I wanted to post something in honor of his first EP dropping, and also that way in the future I can say I was a day one fan, is that even a term? Probably not. Clearly great stuff lies ahead for this kid, in his own words, he's "not another Internet fuckboy swag rapper talking about molly margielas and money". I asked Donny a couple questions and that he answer them in 140 characters or less, so it's a twintterview, get it... lololololol, aight read on.

1. Why'd you start rapping? 
I felt like I had potential to be good at it; and I love music, and why not create something that I love?

I posted a picture of some stuffed shells that were good as fuck on Instagram and Nate (friend of his) said that should be the title. It sounds cool too.

RUDIMENTAL

Rudiemental is a group of four guys out of the UK who are song writers and producers that collaborate with other artists, those different artists do the vocals over tracks. Their most recent video was released a couple weeks ago and I LOVE their videos because they always make me really emotional. Then again it doesn't take much to me cry, but it's not just watching a four minute clip but like you can feeeeel it. The first two videos I posted have actually made me cry multiple times. The beauty of it is really in the syncing of the music and the editing. There seems to be a different experience every time I watch them, enjoy.

Phineas and Ferg

I slept on Ferg. I did. Rocky I've always liked, Ferg not so much. People would be like what are you talking about Ferg has the nicest flow, he's up next and I'd be like Okkk. So a couple weeks ago I was like well clearly I'm missing something. I guess two summers ago when I first listened to his music, maybe I just didn't hear one of his best songs, then I just remember all of his shit sounding the same to me and being reluctant to listening to his music again. I was wrong, he's not that bad. I guess I just heard one bad song. Anyway, I'm happy he's getting shine. Not just him in particular but I love when someone who's part of a group that has a particular figure head gets recognized as well. Like when Frank Ocean went from being "the guy who was part of Odd Future who made Novacane" to "the guy who's part of Odd Future who won a Grammy for his first solo album". But anyway I watched the Nylon Guys interview with him and Rocky (here) and now I'm actually interested in reading the interview in the magazine.

basically a 21st century, electronically educated, hipster version of prince... minus the abundance of sex appeal. interesting shit. i also read that he directs and develops the concept for a lot of his videos, which is really cool cause they're all so different and that says a lot since he's from Kansas City o.O i'm still trying to figure out how he finds people that are willing to be in these videos...

just what i am

In my opinion Kid Cudi has developed the perfect formula for making music that makes you feel good, that's been the case since his first album, Man on the Moon. I guess my obsession with his music all started with Day N Nite, then Pursuit of Happiness, and following those Enter Galactic, Soundrack 2 My Life and Up, Up & Away (that's just from that first album)... from the second there's uhh Ashin' Kusher, Scott Mescudi vs. The World, Mojo So Dope -- oh and Mr. Rager. yeah that's a lot. (didn't really fuck with the third album WZRD too much) anyway, with all of the listed songs I found myself abusing the replay button for a pretty lengthy duration of time. You can literally feel like you're at a different high when you listen to a good Cudi song. When G.O.O.D Music's Cruel Summer came out, his track "Creepers" ended up being my favorite song on the album, and it too got to experience the abuse of the replay button, no surprise there. So when I first peeped the video for "Just What I Am", a song he dropped over the summer, I was glad to induct yet another song into the Replay Button club. P.S. Those are some of his fans he invited to participate in the video shoot that you see partying with him.

Sooo I have a Twitter, it's @fuckflo and I have like no followers lol but it's still fun to use, last week someone I follow retweeted Mr. Hudson, and I was like wait, I like Mr. Hudson's music, why am I not following him. Then I was like wait, what happened to Mr. Hudson? I haven't heard any of his recent music, (this all happened mentally in a matter of five seconds). I went to his Twitter and he'd recently tweeted the link to a Sound Cloud link that read "BIG KIDS MUSIC", curious, I clicked the link, which then opened a page with a list of different tracks. Well as they say, the rest is history, unfortunately they only have two tracks and two music videos to accompany those... it sucked cause after I listened to those songs, all that was left on their sound cloud were remixes to "Drum In Your Chest". Luckily their debut album "Never Grow Up" comes out on October 8th, so my ears will be happy again. Until then I'll enjoy these two. P.S. You should watch both of the entire videos they're both good songs as well as visually interesting.

Marina + The Diamonds

I'm sorta late with this song considering the fact that it came out over two years ago... but my sister put me on to this artist and she's so cute. All her videos are pretty artistic and more than just her dancing and being pretty in front of the camera. These are my favorite videos of hers. Her songs are like a doper funky version of pop... "Oh No!" is one of her older songs and "Prima Donna" is some of her recent shit, idk why you haven't pressed played yet.

BBC Radio 1's "Live Lounge"

I don't know what it is about watching these artists sing songs that are so different from their genres, but I sorta like their versions so much more. Anyway the "Live Lounge" is basically a part of BBC Radio 1, a little thing they do where artists are invited to come into their physical studio and perform one song of their own and sometimes one by another artist in "an acoustic format". So Ben Howard is a folk musician... singing a pop song that went viral, Florence Welch is an indie musician singing a Rap/R&B song and Rita Ora is an R&B artist singing this teen pop love song. idk it's just so great... anyway I listed them in the order of the ones I liked the most. music is such a beautiful thing yo.
