Current Obsession: Maxi Skirts

so you, assuming you're a normal person, might probably have your fair share of obsessions, maybe with shoes, a television show, a specific food
or even that mysterious black spot on your toe but simply put, we all have something we really really love. I am OBSESSED with vintage things -- it's gotten to a point where nowadays i barely ever shop at retail stores, i also have a phobia of people being able to know where i get my stuff from, which may sound weird but i'll save my discussion on that for another post. Anyyway, i now do a lot of my shopping at flea markets, random thrift stores, Salvation Armies and Goodwills-- and sometimes even the elderly people in Harlem that chill on the corners and try to get rid of their vintage clothing on Saturday afternoons. Every once in a while i'll go into a commercial store but not as often i used to. Usually while thrifting, half the time i wonder why these people are giving away the things that they decide to BUT as the saying goes "One man (or woman's) trash is another man (or woman's) treasure." AND I'VE ACQUIRED LOTS AND LOTS OF TREASURE!!
MAXIN AND RELAXIN (outfits i made with maxi skirts)

last week while i was on my way to a friends' grandmother's house, i picked up this really long floral skirt (that 1st picture on the far left down there) and i thought the print was sooo pretty, and after i got that skirt and LOTS of other things that day (including a $1 varsity jacket, $1 vintage floral Christian Dior blouse and a $2 cosby cardigan, just to name a few), i proceeded to my original destination where i arrived around 2 and a half hours late for an 11:00 running date, oops. so i showed my friend all the stuff i got, obviously overflowing with happiness and when i turned to show her grandmother the skirt-- she exclaimed to me that the skirt looked a little too old for me to wear! so i knew then for sure that it was perfect  : ) i believe the saying "it's not what you say but how you say it" relates directly to fashion as well in that "it's not what you wear but HOW you wear it"... her grandmother thought it looked a little too old for me because people would wear these skirts years and years ago back when it wasn't ideal for women to show much skin, though the skirts are generally around ankle length... now fashionistas and celebrities wear it effortlessly making outfits that sometimes (in my opinion) look better than people who may prefer super short or even skin tight skirts.. so after i bought that first skirt, i started thinking about different ways which i could wear it. obviousy since i have no life- i decided to devote a good 2-3 hours typing up this post about ways you can wear a MAXI SKIRT, yeah i know what you're thinking, i'm probably really cool and it's awesome that i even have time to write blog posts since i'm usually out engaging in a social life... lol you're wrong.

alrighty so, in the first picture i tried on a denim shirt with an American Apparel hoodie and some black lace up boots. it didn't come out as awkward as i thought and the hoodie gives the outfit a more chill feel to compensate for the skirt which is a little loud, so after i had a little fun with the skirt, i was on the hunt for moreeeee, a couple days later i ended up buying skirt #2, the one you see in the middle there which i paired with a basic Ralph Lauren tee simply cause this skirt had a greater scale of colors on it than my first one did, and i figured mixing it with another pattern might be a little too much and the skirt in itself has a beautiful pattern so by wearing a simple tee and simple white sneakers the skirt pops out a little more as the focus of the outfit. Lastly, on Friday i did a little more shopping and when i stopped by American Apparel i noticed that they sold these skirts too! not just in the floral print but basic colors and different fabrics also so in that third picture i just put on one of the skirts they sold there and that long sleeve shirt as well. down below there's the "plaid double-layered", to the right the "long accordion-pleat" skirt then the "chiffon double-layered full length" skirt and lastly the "chiffon full length" skirt which is a little more sheer than the rest, btw photo editing creds to picnik.com... it's better than photoshop i don't care what you say.

so as you can see my first maxi skirt bought on that sunny saturday morning inspired this Current Obsession post and it also inspired a floral shoot that i entitled "florence and the flowers" sort of a parody of the band "florence and the machine"... since i don't have a machine-- i have floral prints :D, the whole setting up and shooting process was a little rigorous but i enjoyed it nevertheless : ), i haven't finished editing the pictures but once i do i'll post it on my flickr and post the linkkk here!

so come summer 2011 you will be kept up to date w/ the coolest trends that noone else (except for me) is following anddd i think i'll start posting more frequently with music, and other things that interest me BESIDES my closet : ) btw i triple dog dare you to bookmark my blog and check out my polyvoresoo till next time PEACE AND MAXI SKIRTSSSS your favorite bamf flizzzooooo <3
